Reviews of Brooklyn College

I'm still a freshmen at this college but I'm on this site researching other film schools for more than one reason. First of all, in general Brooklyn College does not have the community I feel is necessary to make good connections. Most of the students live with their parents in various parts of the city, which makes the college act more like a large, private high school. Also in general the extreme disorganization of the administration and excessively large amount of uninteresting core classes forces your film education on the back burner, especially in your first few years. I'm currently taking film one and screenwriting, the two entry level film courses, and many of the film students in my classes are juniors who are just managing to fit these classes into their schedule. Furthermore the equipment is quite limited. In later years you are given the better stuff certainly, however from my and others experiences they don't have a single super 8 camera without an excessive amount of technical problems that make them almost, or entirely unusable. This is apart from the lighting systems which can literally be purchased at your local home depot. And yes, I do mean those high wattage house light bulbs with the metal satellite dish thing around them. I obviously can't compare this to other schools well, especially since I am still new to the program but I am not impressed with the teaching attitudes either so far. my film teacher is far too obsessed with the "thematic focus of the art film" to teach you anything more than forced analysis of things I don't believe the filmmakers are nearly as concerned with. My screenwriting teacher on the other hand is hung up on genera and form, and has managed to kill the creative and stylistically original aspects of any and all scripts in the class. I don't want this to stop everyone who reads it from applying. I have talked to people who have enjoyed some of their film classes. If you desire a general education and are going into your film degree with little prior knowledge you will almost certainly feel much better about your freshmen year than I have so far. However if your interests are extremely focused and you do not wish to study classes like biology and foreign language, which are essentially concentrated reviews of your high school classes, or classes like history of art and history of music, don't be fooled those two are the most boring of them all, then this is defiantly going to be disappointing for you. If you were considering this before and still are I encourage you to take a tour and challenge them with questions related to these issues. I was just personally disappointed and I hoped I could give some of you a look from the inside since nobody else has so far.
