Reviews of New York University (NYU)

★★★★
Matthew D Gingrich Former Student, 15-Aug-2002
1999 - Bachelors in Film/TV. I enjoyed NYU thoroughly as the experience of filming in the world's greatest city can't be beat. Other great pluses include: an incredible cast of alumni (Scorcese, O Stone, S Lee, M Brest, B Ratner, and on) which frequently come back for screenings and lectures, a great campus & a (for the most part) great staff. Cons: price, OLD equipment (we shot video on 3/4 and edited 16mm on Steenbecks), politics and of course the not so good staff. The film school gets POOR financial backing from the university (read - old equipment) and the school should really provide insurance coverage to students at local rental houses. Some of the staff is STELLAR but inevitably as with all schools you have your lot of teachers who's own failures in film have left them with a sour taste. Those who can't do, teach. During my attendance, NYU was known as the finest eastern European staff money can buy.

I will be the first to admit that it is very expensive, however the professors here are amazing. The equipment and sound rooms are readily available with the latest technology. The film department invites many current directors and actors to talk with the students. Furthermore, many now famous directors and actors graduated from NYU, such as Oliver Stone and Alec Baldwin. This school is well worth the price!!
